Electrical safety at work
If you’re an employer, you’re legally responsible for the safety of your employees and contractors when it comes to electrical equipment. Your obligations are set out in the Electricity at Work Regulations (numbers 4 and 16), the Health and Safety Executive Guidance Note GS27 and the Institute of Electrical Engineers Wiring Regulations BS7671. These put the onus on employers to maintain all electrical installations in a safe condition. This isn’t something you can afford to take chances with. In order to be sure you’re doing what you need to, it’s worth engaging a skilled and experienced commercial electrician.
Regular checks
Over 2,500 people are killed or injured as a result of electrical fires every year. The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) deals with over 1,000 reports of accidents at work relating to electric shock or burns, around 30 of which are fatal. Your electrical installations should be tested regularly to ensure that they comply with British Standards BS7671 IEE Wiring Regulations . The recommended frequency of checks for a commercial installation varies from once a year to longer, depending upon the level of usage. These checks should also include portable equipment, which is a major cause of fire both domestically and in the workplace. Employers are legally required to have a program of inspection and testing in place for all portable appliances on their premises.
